Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be an amateur radio operator, communicating with other operators around the world?
Now is your chance. The local Runestone Amateur Radio Club will host its annual Field Day Operating Event June 25-26 at 4-H Park in West Union, just southeast of Osakis.
The event is sponsored by the American Radio Relay League, the national association of radio amateurs.
From Saturday 1:00 p.m. to Sunday 1:00 p.m., local radio amateurs will set up their equipment in the park and make contact with other radio amateurs.
The public is invited to see how it all works.
Local radio operators will join more than 40,000 radio amateurs across North America who will set up temporary transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate the science, skill and service of amateur radio to their communities and to the nation in one event.
Amateur radio operators are involved in public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach, demonstrating operating skills, and promoting STEM – Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
Field Day has been an annual event since 1933 and remains amateur radio’s most popular event.
“Each year, the local Runestone Amateur Radio Club hosts a field day at various publicly accessible locations,” club member Jim Froemke said. “You are invited to join us at West Union to learn about amateur radio as a service and a hobby.”
