NEWPORT NEWS – Mr. Douglas Saunders, 79, died Wednesday, November 3, 2021 at The Chesapeake. He was a lifelong resident of the Peninsula, graduating from Hampton High School in 1960. He attended Virginia Tech and was an avid Hokie fan. He continued his education at the Medical College of Virginia and graduated from the School of Pharmacy in 1966. Doug served as a pharmacist in the area for over 50 years and retired from Denbigh Pharmacy in 2018. He was a dedicated member of the First Baptist Church. Newport News where he was life deacon, choir member and Sunday morning host. He really liked talking, joking and hugging everyone. In his spare time Doug enjoyed being a ham radio operator, working in his garden (especially his tomatoes and cucumbers) and being an avid golfer making a hole in one at some point and always having a Monday tee time with his good friend Billy. and his brother-in-law Jim. But her greatest joy was spending time with her family.

Doug was predeceased by his wife, Jane Hanger Saunders; his parents, Marvin Williard Saunders and Almeda Latvian McCann Saunders. He is survived by his daughter, Stacey Saunders West and her husband, Chuck of Yorktown; son, Chris Saunders of Charleston, SC; son, Chuck Longacre and wife, Marni of Yorktown; daughter, Cindy Boucher and husband, Jeff de Toano; sister, Jeanette Lystlund and husband, Jim of Newport News; 9 grandchildren, Ashley Field (Steve), Jason West (Amber), Logan West (Ashley), Melanie Rivera (Chris), Catherine Lehning (Joey), Caroline Longacre, Suds Longacre, Rachel Wright (David) and Maxx Boucher; 6 great-grandchildren, Kenneth, Michelle and Marion Field, Bradford West, William West and Olivia Rivera; niece, Malia Meadows (Bryan) and nephews, Brennen Mullenix and David Lystlund (Susan).

The family will receive friends from 3-4 p.m. on Sunday November 7, 2021 at Weymouth Funeral Home, 12746 Nettles Drive, Newport News. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 8, 2021 at First Baptist Church Newport News, 12716 Warwick Boulevard, Newport News by Reverend Randy Shepley, Dr. Jim White and Reverend Walter Satchell. Interment will follow at Peninsula Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Baptist Church Newport News, 12716 Warwick Boulevard, Newport News, 23606.
