Amateur Radio “Field Day” will take place on Saturday, June 25 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Baechtel Grove Middle School in Willits. Members of the Willits Amateur Radio Society, Mendocino County Amateur Radio Communications Service and Mendocino Auxiliary Communications Service will participate in the National Amateur Radio Exercise Field Day.
Since 1933, amateur radio operators across North America have established temporary amateur radio stations in public places during Field Day to showcase the science and skill of amateur radio. This event is open to the public and all are welcome to attend.
Field Day is a showcase of how amateur radio operates reliably in all conditions from almost any location to create an independent communication network. “Amateur radio operates completely independent of internet or mobile phone infrastructure, can interface with laptops or smartphones, and can be set up almost anywhere in minutes. That’s the beauty of ham radio during a communications outage,” says Bob Inderbitzen, NQ1R, spokesperson for ARRL, the National Amateur Radio Association (www.arrl.org), which represents operators amateur (or “amateur”) radio stations across the country.
As recent local events (shore communications outages, PSPS communications, fires) have underscored, the amateur radio community is prepared to provide communications when conventional means are not available.
Anyone can become a licensed amateur radio operator. There are over 750,000 licensed hams in the United States, as young as 9 years old and as old as 100 years old. And with groups like the Willits Amateur Radio Society and the Mendocino County Amateur Radio Communications Service, it’s easy for anyone to get involved here. in Mendocino County.
